I’ve began to notice a pattern when I am online. I tend to always go to the same five websites. Hardly ever exploring anything different. I’m either scrolling on Facebook or checking my email or watching YouTube videos. So, it begs the question, is my online experience only confined to five websites when I’m online? Is there more the Internet has to offer? Are we consolidating our lives too much around social media and phone apps? Why is that? Why isn’t there more options when it comes to our online preferences? Why do we only go to places like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.? I noticed that the majority of our time is spent on a few websites. My Dad even spends hours scouring through Amazon on a daily basis as well. Given the immense landscape online, why are we only drawn to social media? I also noticed on my computer keyboard that the letters Y,T,F, and G (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Gmail) , are all located next to each other on the keyboard. Is this just a coincidence? I wonder. I think that we should have somewhere else to go and other things to do while online. It can’t always be about streaming movies, purchasing things and social media. All I am saying is we need more options. We also need forms of websites that will not only entertain us but also help us better ourselves and build up our skills, talents and mind. Because I tend to think that the majority of people (especially children) spend too much time playing around online (especially on their smartphones) that they are not focusing on bettering themselves both educationally and mentally. I remember growing up as a child watching PBS or educational documentaries about dinosaurs, space, art, math and science. I think with the Internet today children are really missing out on the fundamentals of academia. I believe if there were a slew of positive options online that people would have more to do and spend their time more effectively and wisely. I think with the advent of the social media, it only caters to your ego and is only entertaining you and really dumbing down society as a whole. Often, we become consumed by social media and what we see online. Don’t get me wrong I too am on social media and online, but I think there should be a promotion of new content and websites the same way we promote and praise social media so dearly. But I digress. In summation I just wish there was more to do online and even on our phones. It’s a cyclical cycle not just for me I’m sure, but for millions of others as well. Given the Internet, I just wish I had more websites or places to go while online.
