It appears to me in the age of the Internet, smart phones and video games (And sometimes sports), that people are missing out on what life has to offer. Instead of playing Call of Duty, watching a football game or getting caught up with social media. I urge you to try things, meet new people or go somewhere you’ve never been before. I love to explore my country or just go somewhere to inspire me. One of the greatest tips I’d ever received as a filmmaker was to turn off my computer, put down the camera and just experience life. It helps me creatively, especially as a screenwriter to go places and listen to how people speak. It creates an avenue for dialogue and phrases I normally would have never picked up on had I been at home. It also helps as a screenwriter/filmmaker to pick up a book and learn something new. You’d be surprised of the treasure trove of knowledge you can gain by reading literature about all sorts of things. I can also say that reading my college textbooks, has given me more insight on issues that affect my everyday mind set. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with reading. It has helped shape my mind for the last four years and has made me the person I am today. But you say, “I don’t have time to read an entire novel.” I say, “Just pick up a book with short stories.” Start out small, read five pages a day and you’ll be a more well-rounded person for doing so. All I’m saying is get out of your comfort zone and try to expand your mind. Life has so much to offer. Spend time with friends and family. Learn a new language. Listen to an entire album from a musician you love. Better yet try and see them in concert. I have to say music is everything to me. I’m always listening to something new, different genres, different artists, things I’ve never heard before. This too helps me creatively. It’s like certain songs speak to me and brings out feelings of joy, happiness and productivity. There’s a multitude of different things you can do to experience all that life has to offer. Because we never know when we’re going to go. Get out of your bubble. Go watch a play, take an art class, become involved politically, whatever floats your boat. Break free from your chains of daily life and do something positive and fulfilling with your life. I urge you to explore all that the world has to offer. Try something new every day. And live life like it’s your last moment. Because at the end of the day we can only feel regret if we never even tried.
