Hughhh. Another super hero movie? A prequel to Star Wars? Another, and I mean another Fast & Furious movie? What is this, like the 12th one? Are all the movies Hollywood’s making just made for a target audience? For me, Hollywood has hit an all-time low. They’re either making a quick buck or making things that are mediocre at best. And this affects me as a filmmaker. It gives filmmakers the impression that movies are nothing more than CGI driven and pointless things. Whenever I watch a movie from the 80s and 90s it seems to me that they’re more than just movies. The script, acting, camera movements, plot, use of long lenses, even the special effects seem genuine to me. It’s like it gives me a feeling for the protagonist and sometimes even the antagonist and the various situations they get themselves in. But somewhere after 2003 things began to change in the industry. But I also have to say that the pinacol time (at least for me) was between 1996-2003. Again, the plot, rounded characters, camera movements, colors, settings, CGI, you name it were all meshed together to create greatness. I would also have to say this for music videos as well. Why did it all go downhill from here? What happened? I honestly can’t tell you. But I do know one thing, movies flat out suck now. The characters lack emotions, character arc or character development. The plots are basic. There’s little use of camera movement. The dialogue is cliché. It’s like Hollywood’s B movies are being branded as A movies. I believe the bar is set so low. What good can come of this you ask? Well, there’s at least one good thing that can come out of this. And that’s the fact that young filmmakers who aspire to be the next Hitchcock, Scorsese, Spike Lee, John Singleton, Tarantino, etc. Can make a lasting impression by making the next Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, God Father, Paper Moon, etc. Without worrying about the pressure of making what they want to make. They no longer have to go through Hollywood. They can even make it with a couple of smart phones and distribute it online. The bars set so low that anything remotely original can be seen and appreciated by the masses. But until we see some change I’ll continue to be disappointed by what comes out of Hollywood.
